Catch – Early

This drill is for refining how to throw and learning how to catch.
Best suited for 6U or younger.

What you Need

  • Glove for each player
  • 10″ softball per pair of players

    Before you begin:
  • Make sure each player has a glove that fits.
  • Make sure each player has been taught how to toss the ball.

How to Run The Drill

  • Pair players with others of similar skill.
  • Have players stand 10 yards apart
  • Players catching the ball should be “Softball Ready”
  • Once partner is ready, gently throw the ball.
  • Continue for about 10 minutes.

    What to watch For:
  • There will be a lot of missed throws – Thats Okay!
  • Focus on having players move their glove to where they think the ball is.
  • Focus on being Softball Ready and moving their feet if the ball does not come their direction.
  • As they throw, focus on quality over distance or speed. Refine one or two points per drill.
    • Throw over your shoulder
    • Point where you are aiming
    • Keep the front foot down
    • Throw to their torso
    • etc

When to Change

  • Pairs that are consistently surpassing the distance, but are not catching the ball may need more room to watch the ball
    • More distance is fine if there throw is looking good.
  • Pairs that are consistently catching each others throw may need to try more power or rotate with a different partner.
  • Also, play catch with the players to see their throws feel for yourself.
