    Stand about 10-15 feet away.
  • Catching Zone:
Place 2 cones 5 feet apart in between coach and players.

How to Run the Drill

  • First Run:
On Coach’s cue (“Fly Ball!”) toss a single ball up 10-12 feet high and land in between the two cones.
This is a dry run to show the players a pop up and where to run.
  • First Player:
Identify the first player to run the drill (first in the line).
Instruct player to be “Softball Ready” in the catching zone.
Instruct the player to shout “Mine!” after the cue as the prepare to catch the Pop-Fly.
  • Quick Return:
Once the player catches the ball (or misses) have them throw it back.
  • Continue and Repeat:
Next player in line goes next.
Continue cycling players for at least 5 pop ups each.

Coaching Tips and Variations

  • Alligator Trap:
The Alligator Trap method can be used here too. Only in the air vs ground.
Instruct players to follow the ball with their throwing hand AFTER it hits the glove.
  • Fingers Up:
Ensure players are keeping their gloved fingers pointed up, and catching the ball above their head/shoulder.
    Avoid basket catches.
  • Off target:
Make tosses a bit out of the target zone so players have to move to make the catch.
